My hard disk drive has failed and I need to recover my files
Unfortunately, hard disk drives do occansionally fail! The HDD is one of the few semi-mechanical devices
inside your PC and it is constantly working hard to retrieve your data. As a result, failures do occur and
it can be particularly painful especially if you don't have a recent backup!
PC Help Bristol offer data recovery services in cases where the hard disk drive has failed. We use
specialist data recovery software to retrieve deleted or damaged files from your hard disk.
Hard disk failure can be symptomised in a number of ways. Your computer might be unable to load Windows,
you may get the message 'NTLDR is missing' when you start your computer, or if you computer does load
Windows you my experience messages such as 'unable to write to disk, please make sure the disk is not
write protected'. You may also experience random system failures or 'crashing' where the computer stops
responding and you have to switch it off at the power switch.
Even if your computer has some or all of the above symptons, it does not necessarily mean that your hard disk is damaged beyond repair. Hard disk drives are segmented into thousands of tiny chunks called sectors and it is common for some sectors to be damaged whilst others work fine. If you a high percentage of your hard disk drive is usuable, then there is no need to get a new one but it will almost certaintly need repairing and a software rebuild may be required.
